ART AND LIFE IN TUSCANY
with ALEXANDRA CARPINO

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This program is led by NAU faculty member, Professor Alexandra Carpino (Comparative Cultural Studies) 

 
 Space limited. All qualified applicants will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis

This program represents an immersion experience in Siena and Florence, Italy. Students will take a 3 credit class on “Art and Life in Tuscany” in conjunction with a 3 credit class entitled the “Italian Culture: Language, Food and History.” Being in Tuscany this summer will allow students to gain numerous insights into Italian art and culture through course instruction, cross-cultural activities and excursions. “Art and Life in Tuscany” will focus on the Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance art history of various Tuscan cities. “Italian Culture: Language, Food & History” will introduce students to the Italian language, a variety of Tuscan culinary specialties and Italian history from the Middle Ages to today. Included in the program will be excursions to Siena’s Duomo (Cathedral), Palazzo Pubblico, Synagogue, and Pinacoteca as well as to museums in Florence (e.g, the Uffizi and the Accademia), Murlo, Pisa, Pienza, and San Gimignano, where students will apply and built upon their developing knowledge of Tuscan art and culture. Cross-cultural activities will include food tastings, two cooking lessons at the Fontegiusta Scuola di Cucina, a gelato workshop, a bakery visit, and day-long tours of Castellina-in-Chianti and Monteriggioni.

REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for this program are:
2.5 GPA or permission of NAU instructor
A valid US passport

COURSES AVAILABLE

CCS 250:  Cultural Perspectives:  Art and Life in Tuscany (3 NAU credits; Liberal Studies course in the AHI distribution block) OR SA 302:  Art and Life in Tuscany (3 NAU credits; Liberal Studies course in the AHI distribution block) 

AND

SA 201: Italian Culture: Language, Food and History (3 NAU credits; Liberal Studies course in the Cultural Understanding distribution block) OR SA 301: Italian Culture: Language, Food and History (3 NAU credits; Liberal Studies course in the Cultural Understanding distribution block).

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

In-country dates: May 30 (arrival in Siena) - July 2 (depart from Florence), 2019

HOUSING

Participants will stay in doubles/triples in apartments/dorm-style residences in downtown Siena for the duration of the program; they will also stay in a hotel in Florence for the extended excursion to that city.
