Located in Asturias, The University of Oviedo is one of the oldest in Spain at almost 400 years old. Asturias, together with Galicia, Cantabria, and the Basque country, is known as "the green Spain." With the coast to the north and the Cantabrian Mountains to the south, Oviedo is perfectly situated for outdoor activity. Lakes, rivers, beaches and natural areas are abundant in the region. Oviedo is also the political, administrative, cultural and commercial capital of the region. The city is known for its old quarter, theaters, opera and music festivals.

There are currently more than 33,500 students in attendance at the university, which is known for its research and teaching in the humanities, social and legal sciences, experimental sciences, medicine and technology.

As an international student at the University of Oviedo, you will have access to its many resources. You can participate in a Tandem Language Learning Program that involves pairs of speakers working together to learn each other's native language. The International Office also arranges a welcome program to offer a helping hand when you first arrive.

- You must have a 2.5 GPA at the time of application.

Spanish Language and Culture

Students who wish to take a full-semester of Spanish language classes have the option of enrolling in the Spanish Language and Culture Program at the Intermediate or Advanced levels (5 courses) for an extra fee of about 1285€ per semester.

*These costs will be paid directly to the University of Oviedo during the application process.

Getting Credit for Studies Abroad

Students who wish to receive academic credit (aside from general elective and liberal studies credit) must have their courses pre-approved by the appropriate department. Once you apply through our website, you will be able to enter the classes you wish to take electronically. These classes can be reviewed and approved directly by faculty once entered. If you would like courses abroad to count for general elective credit or liberal studies credit only, you can simply ask your study abroad advisor to do that for you.

Semester I: Early October to Late December
Semester II: Mid January to Mid May

When applying to Oviedo, students can indicate whether or not they would like a homestay family. While interest is expressed early on in the process, students should not expect to learn much about their homestay placement until they arrive in country. Homestays cost about 600€ per month, however this figure does include most meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner, daily). So, while the homestay option is more expensive than the apartment option (below), it does include nearly all meal costs for the semester.

Students who do not wish to reside with a homestay family can instead choose to live in apartments, typically with other international students, for around 250€ per month. Arrangements for apartments in Oviedo are not made until your arrival in country, so it is required that students who want apartments arrive 3-5 days before the start of their program in order to arrange apartment housing. The International Office at Oviedo does provide assistance for students seeking apartment housing. While the apartment option is technically cheaper than the homestay option (above), it does not take into account food expenditures for the term abroad.
