aix 2ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Come study in Aix-en-Provence, France! This drawing and painting workshop will consist of two weeks in beautiful Aix in the heart of Provence with drawing and painting excursions to countryside mountains and historic villages as well as views of costal scenic beauty. We will take several sketching field trips to Mount Sainte Victiore, the mountain made famous by the paintings of Cezanne in the late 1800s. A one-day field trip to the Calanques, on the Mediterranean coast near Cassis, is another scenic wonderland. From here we will take a short 3-kilometer hike, painting and drawing along the way. Other day trips include a visit to Arles where Vincent Van Gogh lived and painted, and a trip to Rousillon where the pigment rock for the color Yellow Ocher was discovered. We will need to leave the painting studios no later than 7 am with van/bus. Drive to Cassis We will then hike in to the Calanques . Drawing and painting. This hike into the Calanque en Vau is about two and a half  KM each way. It is steep in places and an up and down, rough at times trail. Please be prepared and have sturdy hiking shoes. Students will pack lunch and snacks for this excursion as well as bringing their art supplies in their backpacks. Weather could be warm to even hot but I expect perfect balmy temps in the Calanques. The views along this trail are outstanding world-class scenery. If the wind is blowing hard the Clanques may be closed by the French National Park system. Wild-land fire is a big threat there when wind is high. This is a two and a half Kilometer (one and a half hour each) way hike into this world-class scenic wonder. The Calanques are a French national park area and it is protected from development and overuse. Hiking or coming in by Kayak are the only ways to reach the Calanques. There, we will paint and draw all day.

June 6: Check Out
By mid-morning students should be checked out of housing and have made arrangements to return home or continue their European adventure on their own. Aix is a vibrant, very old city. You will find a lot of interesting streets, alleys and narrow historic districts to explore. No doubt you will have found your favorite cafes and restaurants as well as places to just go and absorb the energy of this beautiful French town. Expect to be enchanted! Remember, Barcelona in Spain is only a few hours away via train. Paris is to the north a few hours by train as well. Italy and Switzerland are to the north and east very easily reached by train or bus.  Even London and Great Britain can be reached via the TGV (high-speed train) station in Aix. Think of the opportunity to use your newly acquired skills for traveling in Europe for your own private adventure after the workshop ends. Possibilities are unlimited.  By mid-morning students should be checked out of housing and have made arrangements to return home or continue their European adventure on their own.

Allyson Harriet Hirsch, Summer 2018 Participant
The program was honestly one of the most unique experiences I have ever endured.

Summer 2016 Participant
I had an amazing time on this program! I learned so much and one of the best parts was being able to do art work all day, pretty much everyday. I loved the change of scenery, and the independence that I had to explore the city. This trip was one of the best parts of college so far and I am so glad I got this opportunity.
