NAU in Peru: Dental Hygiene Interdisciplinary Learning and Humanitarian Project

About the Program

This Summer 2021 faculty-led program to Peru is specifically designed for Dental Hygiene students to gain first-hand experience offering dental hygiene services (DH 408: Public Health Externships - 2 credits) while learning about public health in the Peruvian context. NAU will partner with Peruvian Immersion to create a dental program that includes Spanish lessons for participating NAU students and dental hygiene services, oral health education, and community outreach to benefit the residents of Arequipa, Peru. The program includes several experiential tourism excursions in the Colca Canyon.


Course Information

DH408: Public Health Externships (2 credits) - an existing NAU course that will be modified slightly to reflect the location.


Instruction

The course is led by Professor Priscilla Rost. Non-NAU staff also work with students during the program.


Requirements

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Good Academic Standing
  • Must be at least 18 years old

Transportation to the Arequipa's airport to connect with your Lima USA flight.
 
Professor Rost will hold a pre-departure orientation to review budget and details with students and faculty in January. Peruvian Immersion will hold a Skype pre-departure orientation one month before the trip to review final itinerary with students and faculty. Mrs. Rost will hold a pre-departure orientation with students to pack the trip supplies and review the syllabus in May.

Accommodation

Students will live in dorms located close to Clinca Paz Holandesa.
