NAU Dental Hygiene in Ghana: Interdisciplinary Learning and Humanitarian Externship

  • NAU will partner with the Phi Beta Institute to create a proposal for the Ministry of Health.  Phi Beta Institute will present the final proposal to the Ministry.

- Ministry of Health - for approval and legitimacy with Ghanaian  people

- Ministry of Interior - aid in travel for NAU DH in the country
- Ministry of Exterior - ease process of bringing materials and equipment into Ghana 

  • CHHS Department of Dental Hygiene will provide the following:

- Bring all supplies, dental hygiene instruments, and sterilization/disinfection equipment for 300 people to include adults and children
- Provide dental screenings, dental cleanings,  fluoride, and oral hygiene instruction for 300 people to include adults and children
- Provide oral hygiene kits for 300 people to include adults and children

The NAU Dental Hygiene Department provides a Bachelor of Science Degree Program that requires two years prerequisite courses and two years in the program.  The externship students have completed their junior year and will have one more academic year before graduation.

Dr. Moore has facilitated faculty led trips to Peru (2013), Guatemala (2014), and Morocco (2016, 2017, 2018).

Tentative Itinerary (subject to change):

  • Pre-departure orientation: date TBD
- Chief Charles Ranson will meet with the students for one hour covering the following topics: Basic communication with the locals, cultural aspects of Ghanaian people, what to expect while traveling in Ghana, and dental background of the people in Ghana.
 
  • Depart JFK – Thursday, July 15th 
  • Arrive Friday, July 16th (Accra)
- Chief Ranson will provide roundtrip transportation from the airport to the hotel, to all tourist attractions, and from the hotel(s)  to the Phi Beta Sigma Institute in Koforidua where dental services will be provided
- Ghana, Accra Hotel check: Alma House / 85 Oloti Rd/ Accra, Ghana /233 30 276 8248
              - Double room: $70 per night (x 2 nights = $140 plus 18% taxes so round up to $170 for two nights at this location)
- Local shopping/ tourism
 
  • Saturday, July 17th – Cape Coast Castle – Tourism
  • Sunday, July 18th – Check out of hotel in Accra
- Travel to Koforidua (approximately 1 hour and 30 min ride by car)
- Check into hotel in  Koforidua, Ghana: Capital View Hotel /  Koforidua-Nsutam Rd, Koforidua, Ghana / 1+233 20 100 6111
             - Double room: $65 per night (x 8 nights = $520 not including tax)
- Tourism,/ Church / Shopping in Okorase, Ghana
- Set up equipment at Phi Beta Sigma  Institute in Okorase, Ghana
  • Monday, July 19th – Friday, July 23rd – working at Phi Beta Sigma  Institute in Okorase, Ghana (30 min ride one way transportation and daily lunch provided by Chief Ranson)
  • Saturday, July 24th – Activities
- Tour of President’s compound
- Historical tourism/cultural immersion
  • Sunday, July 25th– Exit Ceremony / Blessing / Ritual – Okorase, Ghana
  • Monday, July 26th – Depart Ghana for JFK

Activities Designed for Cross-Cultural Experiences

- Chief Ransom will provide cultural immersion for the students by engaging with the local dignitaries of the village, providing guidance for local tourism, and assisting with securing local families to provide traditional meals for the group
- NAU DH will provide dental screenings, dental cleanings,  fluoride, and oral hygiene instruction for 300 people to include adults and children
- Provide oral hygiene kits for 300 people to include adults and children
